The Gypsy Vanner, Also known as, Irish Cob, Cob Horse, Tinker or The Colored Horse, was originally bred to pull the Gypsy’s wagon. They are still used to pull wagons, but you also see them pulling beautiful carriages, being ridden in dressage, hunt seat, saddle seat, western and bareback. The Gypsy Horse by nature is extremely sound and easy to maintain a working or companion relationship with. Although there are no definitive records, It is thought that early breeders combined blood of Shires, Clydesdales, Dales and Fell Ponies, Primarily, In order to obtain a colorful and powerful working companion. Some Fresians and Galloway Trotting ponies (Faded to extinction),Have also contributed to the bloodline of the Gypsy Vanner. The intelligence and kindness that the Gypsy Horse exhibits must be experienced to be believed. * THE GYPSY HORSE BREED DESCRIPTION * Colorful and compact, this breed averages between 13 and 15.2 hands, although individuals do vary at both ends of the size spectrum. The short neck and back give the animal the power to pull the colorful gypsy caravans. An abundance of mane, tail and feather give this animal a magical look, true to its heritage. The Gypsy Horse is not a color breed and can be found in many colors, black and white Piebald being most common. However, all colors are prized. It is a belief of the gypsies that a Gypsy horse with more white is more valuable. Heavy bone, flat knees and ample hooves give this magnificent animal the foundation to sustain a body that includes a broad chest and heavy hips. The withers are rounded making the horse very suitable for harness and the bareback riding style of the Gypsy children.
