Sheltie Colors

Ever wondered what all of the color
       combinations in Shelties are??

Markings can vary between each dog, They can vary with how much white they have for a collar,
feet, chest, Muzzle, and Blaze.  Eyes can be brown,
Blue or a Merle (Both Blue and brown in one eye).
They can carry 2 of each or one of any.
Whether your a Pet owner, Breeder or an inquisitive person

by nature (such as Myself),
I highly Reccomend the Book 'Sheltie Talk'.
One of the Best books you will ever own!

    Sable:
Light Golden to Dark Mahogany Brown w/ White markings.

         Tri:
Black with Tan points and White markings.

         Bi-Black:
Black w/ White Markings

        Blue Merle:
Blue (Silver/Gray color) with Tan Points and White Markings.
Some Merle dogs will
also have black flecking in the blue coat.

    Bi-Blue:
Blue (Silver/Gray Color) without Tan points and White Markings.
Black
flecking also Possible.

         Sable Merle:
Appears like the Blue Merle, only different shades of Sable with  darker brown sable Flecks or spot. Some sable Merles will keep there Dark brown spots and some will fade as they mature. Merle eyes are usually a good indicator as a Merle will only carry a blue or partial blue eye.

        CHW (Color headed White):
50% or more white on a sheltie. Can be any color combination above. CHW Shelties are NOT to be confused
with a Double Merle. A CHW is simply
a white gene. They are as normal as a
Sable or Tri
.

    Double Merle:
This is the result of a Merle to Merle breeding which usually will produce a puppy with mostly white coloring. Double Merle's are at greater risk for being deaf, blind or both. This should only be done
by a seasoned breeder with knowledge of the color genetics. The resulting puppy
can be a great asset to a breeding program
but is not without risk.
